PVC by Nico Stephou is a project that intends to examine the relationship between graphic design and the technicalities of sound production. The medium is vectors translated with laser cutting into records that can be heard. A family of different categories such as textures or cuts has been created in order to start realising the possibilities of the friction between material and the needle of the record player. I consider this as the beginning of a big library of designed records that can be performed as instruments. A new format that the technological advancements of our age has enabled.
Nico Stephou was born in 1990. Since 2010 he has lived in Greece, Germany and the Netherlands, where he is currently completing his bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design at Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. In 2011 he co-founded XORKO Collaborative Movement and has since been the Creative Director. He is also graphic designer at MJMJ Records in Minnesota, USA. As a DJ and music producer he is active with his solo projects RAW SILVER, Malvina, Poems and the bands The Black Post Project, Χειροβομβίδες and Lucid. Nico is exploring visual and auditory territories between new formats and mediums.
