L-Architects has realized the extension of a 90s vacation home located in Pessada, Kefalonia island, and the complete redesign of its interior and outdoor spaces. Combining existing and new elements, the refurbishment endows the home with an integrated, new identity. Built at the edge of an olive grove, the two-level house enjoys unobstructed views of the picturesque local harbor and the sea.
Blending effortlessly with the vernacular character of the island architecture, the building initially comprised two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a living room, while the outdoor area was left in its natural state. The new design didn’t make any significant alterations to the external appearance of the house; instead, it created a bridge between its traditional impression and a more contemporary sensibility. The additions include one more en-suite bedroom and a hammam steam bath. Contemporary materials are applied on large surfaces: namely, pressed cement facing on benches and floors, and cabinetry in woven cane with natural oak details. The interior design combines a curated selection of the owners’ furniture and lights, with new pieces, resulting in an updated yet timeless identity, that incorporates the previous one without overshadowing its existence.
On the other hand, the arrangement of outdoor areas was designed from scratch. The main aim was to strategically integrate a swimming pool that would enjoy spectacular views, while surrounded by spaces that encourage everyday living close to nature. In that framework, the new design was based on some “focal points”. The old oven by the olives was highlighted and combined with a new barbecue and dining area under a generous wooden pergola, while a submerged conversation pit was introduced inside the swimming pool water, complemented with a remote sun deck at the edge of the cliff. Blending new and old-world charm, the resulting design is a house full of character, where timeless natural materials meet modern and dynamic additions.
