The K_AL apartment in Athens by AR03412 Studio

The K_AL apartment project concerns a small apartment renovation in a typical example of the first Athenian urban blocks, with amazing views of the Calatrava bridge and the mount of Ymittos. Located in the Neo Psychico district, it is part of an apartment building originally built in 1969.

“The key to this renovation was to create the impression of the largest space, where the light would flood the entire apartment throughout the day. This was approached through an open plan layout, by using the small spaces to form a kitchen and a cozy living room. The demolition of some walls and the redistribution of basic functional spaces have facilitated the light diffusion to the whole apartment, thus creating a very bright space. The plan was divided into three main areas: a new living room, a bedroom with a walk-in closet, and a private bathroom. The kitchen becomes fully integrated into the living room through a wooden curved construction, which also divides this main room from the rest of the apartment. The curved lines facilitate a smooth transition while enabling people’s flow all over the main part of the apartment. Behind the glass door of the wooden construction, a corridor leads straight to the bedroom, where a single earthy color is being diffused on every vertical and horizontal surface. In this way, a homogenized space that provides tranquility and embraces the user, is being formed. Adjacent spaces, such as the bathroom and the walk-in closet are placed discreetly behind hidden doors. Translucent materials, like glass, lead natural light to the inner rooms creating an ideal situation for owners’ living conditions. The rest colors and materials that are used, such as wood, aim to produce a warm environment. Pastel colors, wooden surfaces, small amounts of black elements, and earth tones are combined and create a sophisticated blend of timelessness.”
