Kapsimalis Architects’ summer house in Mesaria blends the charm of rural history with modern, minimalist design

Perched on the outskirts of Mesaria village in Santorini, Kapsimalis Architects have transformed a historic subterranean wine cellar, or ‘canava’, into a contemporary summer home. With views of the Aegean Sea and surrounding vineyards, the project preserves the building’s original vaulted spaces, winepress, and cisterns, blending tradition with modern functionality. The main vaulted area now hosts an open-plan living room and bedroom, while the adjacent space retains its kitchen function. The design honors the structure’s heritage with restored elements like built-in benches and wine cellar artifacts, while new materials—smooth terrazzo floors, white cement plaster, and minimalist furniture—bring a contemporary edge. This project is a case study in sensitive restoration, maintaining the building’s historical character while adapting it into a refined, modern retreat that balances tradition with innovation.
