Terre restaurant by Panagiotis Kourkoumelis Architects, Simone de Nardi and Emmanouil Matsis, brings garden-like serenity to Argostoli’s old centre

In a quiet alley of historic Argostoli, Terre restaurant, designed by Panagiotis Kourkoumelis, in collaboration with Simone de Nardi and Emmanouil Matsis, transforms an outdoor courtyard into a sculptural setting for communal dining. The design takes cues from the feeling of sharing a meal in a summer house garden in the Ionian or Veneto. Vertical cypress trees and thick plastered walls create a sense of privacy and enclosure, while a restrained palette of soft, pigmented tones unifies walls, floors, and edges. The result is an all-enveloping atmosphere, perfectly attuned to the pleasure of dining under the open sky with friends. The restaurant’s plan breaks with convention, unfolding on a diagonal that stretches toward the edges of the courtyard. A dramatic staircase and a triangular bar amplify the geometry of the space, creating strong visual anchors. Doors are notably absent, dissolving the boundary between indoors and outdoors. A subtle change in level separates the main courtyard from the rooftop terrace, establishing a series of intimate ‘territories’ while allowing diners to maintain visual connection across the space. Lighting is deliberately understated. The courtyard glows with the soft radiance of table lamps, offering just enough light to highlight the carefully curated arrangement of tables and trees. Guests can choose to retreat into dimmer corners, enjoying the interplay of shadow and space. The architects’ thoughtful approach balances privacy and conviviality, shaping a restaurant that feels as much like a secret garden as a dining venue.
