A.C.R.E Architecture embeds pair of summer houses into Kefalonia hillside

Exterior view of F–topia Villas by ACRE Architecture set within the Mediterranean landscape of Kefalonia

Set among the hills of northern Kefalonia, F–topia Villas by A.C.R.E Architecture takes a measured approach to summer living, shaped as much by the landscape as by the memory held within it. Located in Erissos, a part of the island known for its rugged coastline and dense Mediterranean vegetation, the project looks out towards Ithaca while remaining deeply connected to the terrain it occupies. The architecture sits lightly on the site, following the natural slope rather than competing with it. At the center of the property is an old stone threshing circle, which the architects chose to preserve in its original position. Instead of treating it as a decorative historical gesture, the structure became the organizing point for the two residences. The houses are arranged around it with a sense of quiet restraint, allowing the space to continue functioning as a social and symbolic anchor within the landscape. The project draws heavily from the simplicity of local rural architecture. Low volumes, balanced proportions and a restrained material palette give the houses a calm and familiar presence. Inside, the spaces unfold slowly across a single level, encouraging an unhurried way of living tied closely to the outdoors. Large openings frame views of the surrounding vegetation and distant sea, while also allowing natural light and air to move freely through the interiors. The relationship between inside and outside feels intentionally uncomplicated, more about continuity than contrast. For A.C.R.E Architecture, the project was conceived around ideas of balance, care and permanence. Even the name, F–topia, references the notion of a lived and attainable place rather than an idealized retreat. What emerges is not a statement villa designed to dominate its setting, but something quieter and more grounded. A house shaped by routine, landscape and seasonality, where luxury is found in simplicity and in the ability to slow down.
