Georgios Apostolopoulos Architects reworks Athens corner shop into open-fronted Ugly Rolls bakery

Exterior view of Ugly Rolls, a small corner bakery in the centre of Athens.

Ugly Rolls is a compact intervention in the center of Athens by Georgios Apostolopoulos Architects. The project reworks an existing corner shop, turning it into a calm and approachable place that opens itself to the street. A glazed metal façade defines the corner and gives the interior a clear presence in the city. Solid metal panels run along the lower edge, screening the working counters while keeping the space visually clean. The layout places all functional elements around the perimeter, leaving the center open and flexible. The shop unfolds in two connected zones. At the corner, a vertically opening window serves rolls and coffee directly to passers-by, blurring the line between shop and street. Behind the glass, the production area sits in full view, allowing the making of the cinnamon rolls to become part of the public scene. Through a careful balance of openness and enclosure, Ugly Rolls creates a nice exchange between daily activity inside and the rhythm of the surrounding streetscape.

A glazed metal façade wraps the corner, allowing full visibility into the interior from the street.
Solid metal panels line the lower part of the façade, concealing the working counters from view.
The central space is kept clear to maximise usable area within the compact footprint.
The production area sits behind the glazed façade and remains fully visible from outside.
Ugly Rolls was designed by Georgios Apostolopoulos Architects as a small-scale intervention within the existing urban fabric.
