Mplusm Architects reimagine an Athenian apartment balancing history and modernity

Nestled in the heart of Athens, this seventh-floor apartment offers sweeping views of iconic landmarks like the National Technical University and the Archeological Museum. Mplusm Architects embraced the rich historical context while introducing modern design elements, creating a space that bridges past and present. The renovation began with the expansion of windows to better connect the interior with the surroundings. The facade was treated in a warm grey, while crisp white walls inside provided a clean backdrop for the project’s bold design choices. A key feature of the renovation was the client’s extensive collection of Italian and Scandinavian furniture, which guided the design process. The architects balanced a gallery-like setting by introducing deep colors and textures, creating two distinct ‘boxes’ within the apartment. The kitchen, lined with Rimadesio glass doors and finished with Karnazeiko marble, offers views toward the Acropolis. A second lacquered box, housing a small library, is hidden behind a sliding panel leading to the bedrooms. A corridor painted in terracotta, lined with black and white prints, connects these spaces, evoking the neoclassical tones of the surrounding buildings. In the master bath, Oasis Green marble from Tinos pairs beautifully with wooden finishes, adding a touch of luxury. The renovation masterfully blends vintage furniture with extensive Greek marble surfaces, creating a timeless space that honors the historical grandeur of Athens while looking to the future.
