Seriphos Estate by Ioli Chiotini Studio is a modern ode to Cycladic light and memory

Seriphos Estate Ioli Chiotini

Just a few steps from Agios Ioannis beach, nestled in the wild serenity of Serifos, the Seriphos Estate unfolds as a refined dialogue between heritage and contemporary Cycladic design. Comprising two independent residences—Kelyphos above and Edaphos below—the estate is a thoughtful reimagining of a family home, shaped by memory, materiality, and a deep reverence for place. Designed by Ioli Chiotini Studio, the project draws from the essential elements of the island: the dry terrain, the vast Aegean horizon, and above all, the distinctive summer light. Fittingly, the naming of the estate and its residences shares the suffix “-phos”, evoking the Greek word for light—a nod to the project’s central inspiration. Natural materials such as cement mortar, lime-based paints, and textured linen define the interiors, while custom furniture and a restrained palette articulate the unique identity of each residence. Kelyphos and Edaphos reference not only the land and the sea but also the emotional imprint of a childhood spent in these spaces. In the upper residence, the master bedroom sits where the owner once slept as a child, with subtle design gestures—like two-tone linen curtains echoing sky and sea—bringing the past gently into the present. This personal narrative is layered with subtle cultural references that ground the project in Serifos’ history and mythology. Kitchen cabinets in stone recall the island’s metallurgical legacy, while bee-inspired lighting celebrates its famed apiaries. Mirrors shaped like traditional Serifian doorways and a guest bathroom detail depicting Polyphemus’ eye—an allusion to Homeric myth—offer whimsical yet respectful nods to local lore. Though Kelyphos and Edaphos function as distinct homes, they are united by a shared outdoor kitchen—a communal heart that brings guests together, balancing intimacy with openness. In Seriphos Estate, Ioli Chiotini Studio has created a lived reflection of light, memory, and the poetic rhythms of the Cyclades.
