Studio Thanasis reorganizes Athens apartment with diagonal green cabinetry

Open-plan living room with green cabinetry, timber flooring and natural light filtering through large windows.

A diagonal wall of green cabinetry brings order to this 56-square-metre apartment in Athens, renovated by Studio Thanasis inside a 1967 residential building on Makriyianni Street. The apartment had already been stripped back before the architects became involved, leaving an empty shell that could be completely reimagined. In place of the former maze-like layout, the studio introduced a simple plan organised around a single diagonal. The gesture divides the apartment into two distinct zones while opening the living spaces towards the south. The living room, kitchen, dining area and bedroom are arranged as one continuous sequence, allowing daylight to move through the interior. Behind the green cabinetry, a compact service zone contains the bathroom, separate toilet, laundry, storage and mechanical systems. Hidden storage and integrated ventilation keep these spaces visually quiet, while a monolithic Tinos marble vanity adds a tactile focal point. The diagonal is rotated to align with the Parthenon, creating a subtle relationship with the city while improving the apartment’s orientation towards the southern light. The intervention turns a compact footprint into a home that feels open, efficient and carefully composed.
