In her first solo exhibition entitled ‘Dowry’, Kanella wanders through cross-stitched patterns, missing a stitch or two, tangling the threads and diving into the holes made by her grandmother’s needles. She trims the old ways, draws over memories, unravels her family’s handiwork and reinvents her dowry.
The 3 rooms
Her inheritance is the starting point. In the first room, diverse materials and techniques put a twist on the traditional dowry. In the second room, Kanella stands still; she observes and empathizes with the women of the past and the constraint brought upon them. She finally arrives in the third room where she finds catharsis. Here she shares her own resolution, creating the dowry of a modern era. A dowry rooted in tradition yet influenced by new ideals, the freedom of choice, love, companionship, desire, knowledge, logic, music and creativity.
