Gaida Guild reworks Greek folk patterns for contemporary interiors

Gaida Guild reworks Greek folk patterns for contemporary interiors

Gaida Guild turns Greek textiles and folk patterns into fabrics for contemporary interiors. Founded by Sophia Phoutrides, the brand draws on Greeceโ€™s long decorative tradition as well as her own family history. One of its designs, Tokat, began with an antique baby blanket from the town of the same name in Central Anatolia, close to the villages where Phoutridesโ€™ fatherโ€™s family lived before the population exchange. With few possessions surviving their journey, the maker likes to imagine that textiles like this might once have belonged to the domestic world they left behind. It is a particularly personal example of the thinking behind Gaida Guild, where historic textiles and folk patterns are studied and reworked into contemporary prints. Raised in New York and now based in Washington, D.C., Phoutrides spent her summers with family in northern Greece, returning often enough for the country to become a constant point of reference. Her motherโ€™s interest in folk traditions introduced her early to Greek craft. Each Gaida Guild design begins with an existing textile or motif before being translated into print and hand screen-printed in France at a historic family-run mill. That relationship between fabric, memory and place also shapes the way the collection is photographed. For a recent shoot, Phoutrides chose the folklore museum in Arnaia, setting the fabrics among preserved traditional Macedonian rooms to show what she describes as another face of Greekness. The result is a collection that does not simply reproduce historic motifs, but lets them travel once again, from old textiles and family histories into contemporary homes.
