The Domestichordophone is a playful cabinet with the features of a classical string music instrument. It’s design was inspired by a research on domestic sonic space and classical musical instruments known as chordophones. The chordophone classification distinguishes the group of instruments that produce sounds by vibrating stretched strings. Hence, the Domestichordophone can be used in various ways: as storage for personal belongings, as alarm for privacy or as an instrument to create music. The furniture is accessible from two sides, giving two people the opportunity to access and use it simultaneously. Users can experience it individually or in company and find their own means of sound within the domestic space.
The Domestichordophone was researched and made during thematic design studios by Eglė Jacinavičiūtė and Savvas Laz in the Master Interior Architecture & Retail Design [MIARD] program at the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam University, Netherlands.
