A+ architects has transformed a traditional residence on the Greek island of Leros into The Monk, a minimalist retreat defined by calmness, natural textures, and an atmosphere of quiet authenticity. The project reinterprets local architecture through a pared-back lens, combining island modernism with simple, clean lines. Interiors are stripped to essentials: white walls, linen fabrics and handcrafted details that highlight the interplay of light and material. Stone, wood and textiles connect the house to its natural surroundings, while a restrained palette evokes a sense of monastic simplicity. The architects describe this approach as a form of hospitality rooted in experience rather than display. “The Monk is a living organism of hospitality, a house with a soul,” the studio explains. Spaces are designed to shift with the light throughout the day, offering moments of silence and tactile intimacy. The result is a retreat that embodies both the island’s heritage and a contemporary search for depth and essence.
