Kapsimalis Architects has combined a restored cave house with a new cluster of suites to form Canaves Suites, set on the cliffs of Oia overlooking the volcanic caldera of Santorini. The project retains the character of the original cave dwelling while introducing five additional rooms arranged across the sloping site. Four suites are positioned in a stepped formation at ground level, each with open-plan interiors, a private courtyard and a plunge pool. A two-level suite above offers dual terraces and a semi-open pool oriented towards the Aegean Sea. The design adopts the cubic forms of traditional Cycladic architecture, using a rhythm of shifting volumes to optimize views and maintain privacy. Freestanding walls and planted elements subtly define outdoor spaces without blocking light or sightlines. Interiors feature off-white plaster walls, dark grey marble floors and built-in cement furniture, paired with dark-stained oak, metal details and custom marble pieces. Ceramic vessels, textured fabrics and opal glass lighting add layers of materiality, while exterior finishes in warm white allow the architecture to blend into its setting. The result is a composition that balances tradition with modern hospitality, framing the island’s dramatic views while offering spaces of calm and understated luxury.
