Design-Suite balances old and new at Harry’s café in Thessaloniki

In the centre of Thessaloniki, Greek design studio Design-Suite has designed Harry’s, a café that feels both familiar and fresh. The space brings together traditional and modern elements in a calm and balanced way. Instead of copying the usual look of an urban café, Design-Suite chose to reframe it using material honesty, tonal restraint, and architectural precision. The interior features a rich mix of surfaces: glossy oxblood ceramic tiles cover the front bar, set against exposed concrete columns, brushed steel details, and visible ceiling conduits. These industrial gestures reflect the building’s past, while tactile elements like green leather upholstery and custom dark-wood joinery add warmth and character. Lighting was treated as a narrative layer, not just a practical feature. Above the bar, HAY’s Brim Pendants in bottle-green glass create contrast with the surrounding stainless steel, while Marset’s Atlas fixtures highlight the café’s classic wooden pass. These lighting choices set the mood and reinforce the overall colour palette. Harry’s avoids easy labels. It isn’t retro or minimalist, nor does it follow trends or rely on nostalgia. Instead, it feels like a place that has been cared for over time — welcoming, balanced, and different. Design-Suite aimed to disrupt the familiar just enough to create something new: not too old, not too polished, but simply the kind of place that feels right.
