George Vavatsis
George Vavatsis is a ceramics artist, born in Thessaloniki (1974). His work based on the potter’s wheel consists of utilitarian objects made of stoneware, clay, or porcelain. He studied Visual & Live Art at Cheltenham & Gloucester C.H.E. Uk and in 2000 he opened his first pottery studio in Thessaloniki, Greece.
The Story
THE MAKER
George Vavatsis is a ceramicist based in Thessaloniki, Greece. Driven to create pieces with
their own personality, he works on a potter’s wheel to transform clay, stoneware, or
porcelain into one-of-a-kind tableware and artworks. What motivates him is the endless
possibilities of form, function, and color and above all – a love of making. For him, ceramics
is a way of life. As he describes, pottery is an ongoing process that never ends: “Every
morning I have the same worry, to open the kiln door and see what happened there”.
THE PROCESS
Paying homage to tradition while adhering to a more contemporary aesthetic, George
Vavatsis handcrafted our range of functional ceramic dinnerware. Following a minimal and
slim geometrical approach, the collection is characterized by a delicate off-white color, and
a smooth or slightly dotted surface, while each piece is wheel-thrown using light stoneware.
George’s work organically evolves through deep immersion in the making process, allowing
him to create a natural effect.
