The Reverse Pickup Table Lamp is a design by Athens-based ADD Architectural Studio, which aspires to reconsider what a table lamp is and what it can become. It was awarded the 2017-2018 SILVER A’ Design Award for the Lighting Products and Lighting Projects Design Category by the International Design Academy.
The design was inspired by the phenomenon of sound transmission, as a vinyl rotates on an all-time classic pickup. In this case, the vinyl was replaced by a translucent marble discus which was placed standing, thus resulting into a reverse pickup table lamp. The concept is concluded with the bronze arcs, which combined with the discus’s final position depict the archetype of the pickup needle placed upon a vinyl.
The uniqueness of the design consists in the presence of an elegant discus made of translucent marble. The discus gradually lights up as it rotates along the base. The form of the two bronze arcs emanates from the desire to enclose the discus and accentuate the notion of movement and the playful alternation between light and shadow. Three different discuses, each made of different colored marbles were chosen to match the users’ aesthetics and mood. As the mood changes, all you need to do is “play” your favorite discus.
The further the discus rotates from the starting point, the more it gets illuminated. The discus can be detached and replaced with another colored discus, simply by pulling it off the guide. The necessary dimmer and adapter are placed on the wire, while a movement sensor placed on the guide provides the dimmer with a wire signal, allowing for the dimming. The package includes all three discus colors.
