Yulia Koval captures the quiet details of Dexamenes on 35mm film

There are places that reveal themselves quickly, and others that ask you to look a little longer. For Slow Coast, Athens-based artist Yulia Koval spent time at Dexamenes Seaside Hotel in Kourouta observing the quieter details of its surroundings, from rust spreading across weathered metal and vegetation meeting concrete to changing light on the Ionian Sea and the occasional animal passing through. Created during an artist residency and photographed entirely on 35mm film, the six-work series is less a portrait of a destination than an exercise in noticing what might otherwise be missed. Koval turns her attention to the ongoing relationship between the former wine factory’s industrial architecture and the landscape that has slowly grown around it, finding beauty in textures, traces and small encounters. There is something fitting about seeing the photographs return to the place where they were made nearly a year later. Curated by Koval together with Dexamenes founder Nikos Karaflos, the exhibition is installed throughout the hotel, allowing the images to gently enter its everyday rhythm. Open until 17 October 2026, Slow Coast offers another way of experiencing this stretch of the Peloponnese, by paying closer attention to what is already there.
