How to Spend September in Athens

How to Spend September in Athens

The holidays may be over and the city may be filling up again, but summer is in no hurry to leave. Mornings begin with traffic and coffee on the way to work, yet a swimsuit might still be tucked into a bag for later. Tables remain outside, open-air cinemas keep their screens lit and plans have a habit of stretching well beyond bedtime.

After the relative quiet of August, familiar faces return to neighborhood cafés, bakeries reopen and group chats become busy again. It is a month of getting back to things without giving everything else up just yet. Here’s how to do September like an Athenian.

Keep Your Swimsuit Close

Putting away your swimsuit in September would be premature. The sea around Athens has spent an entire summer warming up and swimming remains part of the city’s routine well into the month. The difference is that it no longer requires a whole day devoted to the beach.

Go early, before work, or leave the city in the late afternoon when the light is softer and the beaches begin to empty. A towel, swimsuit and change of clothes in the car or office bag are often all that is needed. There is something particularly satisfying about answering emails in the morning and being in the sea a few hours later.

Start Walking Again

Athens in high summer has a way of turning even a short walk into a calculation involving shade, water and the nearest air-conditioned room. September gradually changes that.

As the fiercest heat begins to ease, walking becomes part of the city again. Routes that felt ambitious a few weeks earlier become an excuse to linger. Walk home instead of taking a taxi. Take the long way to dinner. Cross a neighbourhood simply because the evening is pleasant enough to do so.

It is also when Athens begins to reveal itself at its best again, not necessarily through its landmarks but through the things encountered between them. An open workshop, chairs outside a kafeneio, the smell of dinner from an apartment window, a small square you had forgotten was there.

Return to Your Neighborhood

Perhaps the most noticeable change in September is simply that everyone is back.

The bakery downstairs is open again. The usual table at the café is occupied. Friends who spent August travelling in different directions suddenly live twenty minutes away from one another again. Even the familiar exchange with the person at the neighbourhood grocery feels like part of returning home.

After a month defined by leaving the city, September is about rediscovering the small radius around your front door. Coffee comes from the usual place, Saturday morning means errands and the neighbourhood slowly resumes the routines that make it feel inhabited.

Shop Between Seasons

September is one of the most interesting months at the market because summer does not disappear overnight. Tomatoes, aubergines and peppers are still piled high while grapes and figs announce that the season is beginning to turn.

A trip to the laiki becomes a good way of noticing the change before the weather necessarily does. Shopping is still colorful and abundant, but the contents of the bag are subtly different from those of high summer.

Buy what looks good rather than arriving with too much of a plan. A bag of grapes for the fridge, figs to eat that afternoon, tomatoes while they are still worth eating simply with salt and olive oil. September cooking can wait a little longer before becoming complicated.

Have One More Night at Therino

There is always a point in September when someone asks whether you have been to a therino yet, followed shortly afterwards by the realisation that there are not many evenings left.

Go before the question becomes “did you manage to go this year?”. Choose a film, arrive a little early and take a seat beneath the trees. There will be cold drinks, the occasional sound of a motorbike beyond the screen and perhaps the lights of surrounding apartments above it.

The film is only part of the reason for being there. Open-air cinema is one of those Athenian habits that makes summer feel embedded in the city itself, which is precisely why its final weeks feel worth holding onto.

Keep Dinner Outside

September is not the month to retreat indoors.

Tables still spill onto pavements and into courtyards, windows remain open and dinner continues to start later than intended. The difference from August is that the city around those tables is busy again.

Choose somewhere close enough to walk to and resist making the evening overly elaborate. A neighborhood taverna, a few plates for the table, cold wine and friends you have not seen since July are enough. Some of the best September evenings in Athens are simply reunions disguised as dinner.

Treat Thursday Like Friday

By September, the city’s cultural calendar begins to wake up too. But you do not necessarily need to know which exhibition is opening or where everyone is heading that evening to notice it.

Thursday suddenly becomes a night for staying out. Galleries open their doors, pavements fill with small groups holding drinks and one stop often leads to another. After the slower social calendar of August, there is a renewed appetite for seeing people and finding out what everyone has been working on.

Make one plan and leave room for the rest of the evening to organize itself.

Keep Sunday Loose

The temptation after returning from summer is to fill September immediately with plans. Sundays are better left slightly unresolved.

Start with coffee. Pick up a newspaper or something for breakfast. Walk somewhere rather than deciding in advance where the day should take you. Lunch might become the main event, or someone might suggest a swim while the weather still allows it.

There is no need to escape Athens every weekend simply because you spent the previous months doing exactly that. September is a good time to remember that staying in the city can feel like a plan too.

Don’t Call It Autumn Just Yet

Eventually, the evenings will cool, the open-air cinemas will close and the swimsuit will finally disappear into a drawer. But September rarely asks Athens to make that transition all at once.

Instead, the month allows two seasons to overlap. Work resumes, schools reopen and diaries begin filling again, while dinners remain outdoors and weekends can still end by the sea. The city becomes busy without quite becoming serious.

Perhaps that is why September suits Athens so well. Everyone is back, but for a few more weeks, nobody seems entirely ready to come inside.
