A 90-square-metre apartment in Kypseli, Athens has been reconfigured by architect Agnese Casadio, who paired the charm of its late-1950s structure with a contemporary, flexible layout. The renovation preserves key original elements -terrazzo and timber floors, ceiling cornices, interior doors and other mid-century details- while rethinking the apartment’s once-segmented plan. The former sequence of small rooms has been opened up into a more fluid arrangement that supports modern living. Flexibility is central to the design. Movable partitions and subtle spatial devices allow the home to shift between open-plan living and more private, enclosed zones, adapting to different daily needs. At the heart of the apartment sits the kitchen, conceived as both a social anchor and a circulation core. Its diagonal geometry responds to the unit’s southern orientation, drawing sunlight deep into the space and reinforcing a sense of continuity and warmth. The project creates a quiet dialogue between past and present. It honors the apartment’s original fabric while introducing a contemporary spatial rhythm suited to urban life.
