At a basic level the beginning goal behind the design of the Read-Unread bookshelf was to conceive of a bookshelf that was more than just a flat board to rest a book on. It was designed to give a visual representation to our relationships with books and reading. The balancing of the read against the unread mirrors the weight of knowledge we acquire against ignorance, and also reflects on our personal interaction with books, the shifting of pages from one hand to the other.
