The Modernist Thessaloniki is a boutique hotel set within a restored 1920s heritage building in downtown Thessaloniki, designed by FormRelated. The project brings together old-world elegance and casual luxury through a restrained, tactile approach that blends art deco geometry, mid-century detailing and references to Danish modernism. Rather than nostalgia, the design focuses on clarity, balance and comfort, allowing the building’s original character to remain present but quietly composed. Aimed at frequent, often solo travellers, the hotel is conceived as a temporary home rather than a destination in itself. Service is professional but unforced, while the atmosphere draws from the city’s urban energy without becoming overtly performative. Guest rooms are treated as modern living spaces, organised with a clear sense of order and proportion. They are available in four sizes – S, M, L and XL – each with its own spatial rhythm and bespoke layout. Custom-designed furniture and lighting are tailored to each room, reinforcing a feeling of precision and calm. Furnished balconies vary in size and view, providing the only deliberate irregularity within an otherwise controlled interior language. Materials and details are intentionally understated: fine cotton linens, soft lighting and carefully framed ceiling details encourage slower moments of use. Functional elements are reduced to their essentials, creating an experience that feels intuitive rather than decorative. The result is a hotel that privileges small, private rituals over spectacle – a place defined less by statement gestures and more by proportion, logic and the quiet pleasure of things being exactly where they should be.
