Theo Poulakos and Manos Botsaris reimagine urban living space in Athens with innovative, minimalist design

Theo Poulakos in collaboration with Manos Botsaris have redefined the concept of urban living in Athens by transforming two separate apartments within a traditional Athenian polykatoikia. The 6th-floor apartment now serves as the primary residence for the owners, while the 7th-floor hosts an independent guest room, showcasing innovative design concepts that prioritize space, light, and functionality.

The primary goal was to create a spacious, well-lit interior. Poulakos devised a design that discarded traditional hallways and small rooms in favor of an expansive, open layout. This included two floating boxes within the space, with one housing two bathrooms and closets, and the other serving as a kitchen island. These boxes, alongside the existing non-orthogonal walls, delineate private and public areas, offering flexibility for various activities like living, cooking, working, and sleeping. The color scheme and materials were thoughtfully selected: white walls set a tranquil backdrop for bold, dark green boxes, mirroring the greenery of the urban surroundings. The new infrastructure for electricity, plumbing, and air conditioning is seamlessly integrated into the boxes, preserving the living area’s ceiling height.

On the 7th floor, the design maximized space to create an inviting guest room. The installation of a new kitchen and bathroom in light green hues opened up the central space and restored access to a balcony, transforming a small studio into an ideal retreat for guests. The rooftop design was crafted to capture breathtaking views of the city. A solid balustrade wall was strategically placed to ensure privacy without compromising the view. Additionally, a built-in bench and the integration of plants, a bathtub and tents created a serene outdoor space that complements the vistas of Strefi, Lycabetus Hill, and the Acropolis.
