Saint of Athens brings a contemporary Kore to Nespresso Boutique in Kolonaki

The ancient Korai of the Acropolis have been part of Athens’ visual identity for centuries. Now, one of these familiar figures has found a contemporary interpretation in Kolonaki, where a new marble artwork brings a little of the city’s history into the Nespresso Boutique. Created as part of Nespresso’s international Local Touch project, Kore was developed under the art direction of Saint of Athens, with a digital design by contemporary artist Simek translated into marble by Form to Matter.

The work takes its starting point from the Archaic Greek statues of young women known as Korai, retaining their characteristic pose in a simplified, geometric form. One hand reaches forward as if holding an offering to Athena, while the other gathers the folds of her chiton, suggesting a step forward.

Although its lines and proportions belong to a contemporary visual language, the figure remains recognisable, connecting an ancient artistic tradition with the work of Greek creatives today. Its position on the boutique wall, facing the entrance, adds another reference to Athens’ more recent architectural history.

During the mid-century modern period, commissioned artworks often decorated the entrance halls of Athenian apartment buildings, bringing art into the everyday experience of the city. Kore follows something of that tradition, becoming part of a space people pass through while carrying references to different periods of Athenian life.

From the Acropolis to the modern city, the sculpture brings an old gesture into a new setting, showing how familiar forms can continue to find meaning in the present.
