Greek design studio Polkadot has unveiled the new visual identity for the Athens Epidaurus Festival, centred on the expressive potential of human movement and the physical act of mark-making. Developed through a manual process, the identity transforms the trace of a rotational gesture into a contemporary graphic language that reflects the performative nature of the festival.

According to Polkadot, the identity is intended as more than a graphic system. The studio describes the poster as an invitation rather than a finished object, encouraging viewers to move beyond passive observation and actively participate in the creation of meaning. The project draws on the idea that performing arts begin with the body and are completed only when an audience encounters the work. This concept informed both the design process and the resulting visual language, which emphasises gesture, movement and human presence.

The commission marks a significant milestone for Athens-based Polkadot, whose work in the cultural sector spans more than two decades. The studio has previously collaborated with major institutions including the Athens Concert Hall, the Acropolis Museum, the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus and New York’s Lincoln Center. The new identity will accompany the Athens Epidaurus Festival as it continues to position itself as one of Europe’s leading cultural events, connecting contemporary visual communication with the live experience of performance.
